In Memoriam: Gerrit-Jan Swinkels (NED)
Excerpt from the FEI PRESS RELEASE
published on 26 May 2015
“In Memoriam: Gerrit-Jan Swinkels (NED), 1947-2015
Gerrit-Jan Swinkels (67), President of Indoor Brabant, the world-famous equestrian event in ‘s-Hertogenbosch (NED), died suddenly yesterday at the age of 67 while riding on the Belgian coast at Knokke-Heist in West Flanders.
A passionate horseman, racing driver and diplomat, Swinkels was highly respected as a visionary and renowned for his ability to bring athletes, officials, sponsors and the media together to promote equestrian sport.
Swinkels became President of Indoor Brabant in 2002 and planned to hand over to his successor in 2017 during the event’s 50th anniversary.
Indoor Brabant has welcomed the world’s best indoor Jumping, Dressage and Driving athletes as part of the prestigious FEI World Cup™ series. The first of nine FEI World Cup™ Dressage Finals was held at Indoor Brabant in 1986, with the first FEI World Cup™ Jumping Final staged here in 1994. In 2012, the first joint FEI World Cup™ Jumping and Dressage Final was then held, and many qualifiers for these series, and for the FEI World Cup™ Driving, have taken place at the Indoor Brabant.”
The EEF expresses its condolences to his family, friends, and the Royal Dutch Equestrian Federation (KNHS).

The Inaugural “EEF Secretary Generals Meeting” Ends with High Notes on Cooperation.

In an effort to address the operational aspects of the Equestrian Federation managements, the European Equestrian Federation (EEF) organised a first of its kind. The inaugural “EEF Secretary Generals Meeting” was held during the internationally acclaimed equestrian fair of “Equitana” on Friday, 20 March in Essen (GER). 24 participants representing 19 countries were present at the meeting including the new FEI Secretary General, Sabrina Zeender. The meeting was opened with the official address of Mr. Hans Joachim Erbel, the CEO of Reed Exhibitions for the organisation of “Equitana”.

Following the meeting, the Secretary General of the European Equestrian Federation, Ali Kücük said:

“We had been long intending to organise such a meeting since 2013 and could finally conduct it here in Essen. Our main purpose was to be able to discuss the operational matters of our member federations in detail and to come up with best practice solutions. We have also seen two excellent presentations from our colleagues Maarten Van Der Heijden(NED) and Teodor Sheitanov(BUL) about NF structures. At the end, the feedback of our participants was very positive and we have already received a host venue application for the next year’s meeting. This shows once again the need for such gathering and I am hoping that this is the beginning of an annual meeting series for the member National Federations of EEF. Finally, I would like to thank the “Equitana” organisation and the German Equestrian Federation for their outstanding hospitality.”
