The FITE World Championships for Senior and Young riders took place in Segovia, Spain from the 1st to 3rd of September 2016. Kirsten McCormack with her horse Strand Hill Batman represented TREC Ireland in the Young Rider section, doing so for the second time after also being selected for the team in Italy, 2014. Kirsten's mother Helen was the Irish Chef d'Equipe with International Judges Adrian Flynn, Mairead Moynihan and Gwen Bastian also representing Ireland at the event. Luckily, TREC GB was able to arrange a space on their lorry for Batman so he travelled in great company and style!

Kirsten%20closing%20prep.jpg

Even with the high temperatures and barren landscape the venue was spectacular, with a number of arenas, cafes and facilities. Riders were able to practice their MA, go for many hacks to familiarise themselves with the maps and with ample wash bays were able to keep horses cool. Kirsten's sister Kayleigh, who is also on the Young Rider Development squad with her pony Caspian, was well familiar with both TREC and Batman and acted as groom, with dad John keeping everybody's spirits up and taking many photos.

Team Ireland was completed by Noreen Hennessy, Amanda Sheridan and Elaine Neary who all came over to support the Irish and see what would be in store at future events.

Supporters.jpg

Batman passed the vetting on Thursday morning with flying colours, and a great low heart rate. The language barrier proved a little confusing at the equipment check when shoes and nails were requested - of course the 'hoof boot' and ' farriers tools' is what was meant! The opening ceremony took place inside the beautiful town of Segovia, due to it being a 10km round trip on horseback, the decision was made not to put Batman through this the night before a World Championship POR!

The POR was tricky and included grid references and very difficult terrain, as well as being incredibly hot. A lengthy thunder storm did cool horses and riders down however, and TREC GB as well as Team McCormack greeted Kirsten and Batman at the finish - some 10km away from the venue. Again, Batman sailed through the vetting and everybody was set for the MA and PTV on Friday morning. Beautifully turned out with a Shamrock adorning his quarters, Batman cantered a full 30 points and achieved a very respectable 13 points for the walk, in a very scary arena (10 judges with parasols, chairs and potted plants) to achieve 43 out of 60 points.

MA.jpg

On to the PTV, which was full of jumps, perfectly suited for most Irish horses and riders, but this combination in particular! A group of non Irish Batman fans followed the combination around to watch the jumps, and were astounded at the control exhibited  from the Path Crossing to a difficult S-Bend, followed straight by a gallop - some 'wows' of admiration were overheard.

Path%20crossing.jpg

Finishing on a score of 111, her combined score put Kirsten into 16th place in the Young Rider Individual section, a fantastic result for a superb rider and horse, the true definition of what TREC is all about: horse and rider coming together to bring out the best in each other.

kirsten%20and%20batman.jpg

Well done Kirsten, you have done yourself, your family, country and organisation extremely proud. We look foward to seeing what you can do on home turf next year!

One week has passed since the unthinkable happened, and Orla was so suddenly and cruelly ripped from this world. There is nothing I can say that hasn’t already been said, between stories shared at the wakes, tributes on social media and in the news, and the eulogies at the funeral. Anybody that knew her or even met her once will talk about her smile, friendliness and generosity. Her willingness to help, her infectious enthusiasm and her obvious dedication to those she cared for. The hundreds and hundreds of people who came to pay her respects to her family and fiancé Jimmy, and the size of the guard of honour, say more than I ever could. However, I’ll give it a go.

We met through TREC, as many others did, and my first memory is of traipsing through the Donegal countryside whilst Orla translated for me – I thought I’d landed in a different country, as I couldn’t understand a word! I met many other wonderful people up in the hills of Donegal, all obviously good friends of Orla’s, which said a lot about her. TREC really took off with all their help, but it was Orla’s drive and commitment that really developed the sport there, as it has since done for North/ North West TREC as well. As a coach, trainer, traceur and organiser, she spent many, many days working on behalf of TREC Ireland, travelled all over the country to help at events, and even got to compete the odd time, on Molly, Ted, Ri and most recently, Baxter. She took on national events, the position of Public Relations Officer, and Young Rider Chef d’Equipe – no matter what was asked, she never said no, even if she already had 1000 things on her to do list.

We spent many hours putting clipboards together, had endless cups of tea (or glasses of wine) while we sorted through data sheets, measured routes, planned courses or did training for treccies (I saw such beautiful parts of Ireland thanks to her knack for finding super venues). We drove around Donegal and Cavan in Jerry, got soaked, covered in weird flower pollen, ate some very posh and nutritious lunches in the middle of the woods whilst walking a potential POR route, did some Irish dancing on a footbridge in the dark whilst being eaten by midges, and most of all, laughed and giggled through it all. I learned about ‘glar’ ‘googie pieces’ and bands I had never heard of, talked about weddings, houses, families, food and holidays…

A better friend nobody could imagine. She brought so many people together. As Serena said to me, Orla was a lot of people’s best friend – because that is how much love she had to give, and how absolutely huge her heart. Her heart had space not only for all her family and friends, but also for all the young people she took care of. Now this heart of mine aches at the thought of a life without her, not dancing at her wedding and not sitting with a pint of cider the day after, the day she was so looking forward to, starting married life with her soul mate, Jimmy.

On behalf of TREC Ireland, our deepest sympathies go to Orla’s parents, Brian and Helen, better known as Daddy and Mammy O’Reilly to the horsey folk, her sister Maeve and brother Shane, and of course Jimmy, her wonderful fiancé, who has become a part of the TREC family. Our ‘middle man’, now that our ‘middle woman’ is gone.

RIP Orla O’Reilly, you were one in a million and will never be forgotten.

Volunteers of the Year

Nominations were received for the volunteers of the Year, please read on to see what was said about them:

Michelle Chambers and Jimmy McKinney

Michelle Chambers and Jimmy McKinney for their outstanding help at both the PTV & MA Championships in Punchestown this year and also the National Championships in Stradbally last year. Michelle acts as call up and Jimmy as starter. Between them they keep the day running smoothly and take a huge amount of pressure off organisers. Not only do they do the task asked of them but they use their initiative to deal with any problems and work really well together to ensure a fast moving day. They are invaluable helpers and really feel they deserve recognition for this.

Noreen Hennesy

Noreen has been involved in Trec since Trec Ireland was set up but always in the background. To riders she is one of the judges/ stewards that they encounter when at a competition but when they are under stress in the morning before the map room she is the one holding their horses so that they can get the equipment check done, plus doing the check and offering a calming word!! They meet her again at a checkpoint but she is invariably at multiple checkpoints on the day! They all think she in only on for their level!! Later she listens everyone’s tales of the day delighting in all their escapades. Noreen is a volunteer for competitions for the 2 days and to the organisers she is one of a small group of judges that you can depend on to turn up, can send out anywhere with anyone, can be moved around to fill in gaps/emergencies on the day and never complains!!!! She will travel the country to help out at a competition and the biggest surprise is that she doesn’t ride and has no relations competing. She just loves helping out and chatting with Trec people!!! She is ones of those special people in the background that is essential to the running of a Trec event.

The award was collected by Mairead Moynihan.

She is always encouraging of others and goes out of her way to help individuals to learn and succeed, often stepping down from competing herself in order to ensure that training days and competitions run smoothly. She travels to distant venues to help and she did attend every single event in West Cork as well as national events either as a rider or as helper.

Winner of the Welsh Irish Friendship Shield - Leinster TREC On Tour

Here's the nomination received by the committee:

My idea for the Welsh Irish Friendship Shield would be "Leinster TREC On Tour". There has now been "groupie" representation from Leinster TREC at three British Championships. It started off in Dartmoor in 2011 with a merry band of 7?, who cheered us on and provided much needed sustenance at the end of POR and all sorts of assistance over the course of the weekend. In Wales in 2013, an even merrier band of 10/11?? cheered on all nationalities and made some good friends/contacts in the process. They even shared some of their goodies - with the Irish team! Then, in Scotland, in 2015, nine groupies travelled to Temple in their minivan with "Leinster TREC On Tour" signs and provided sustenance to all comers at Level 2 POR, and rekindled old friendships and formed new ones. I doubt that there is one competitor at this year's TREC GB Championships who was not well aware that the Irish groupies were in attendance! Isn't that a suitable reason for awarding a "Friendship Shield"??"

The Shield was accepted by Leinster Treccies Diana O'Huid, Brendan Gavin and Colette Gavin.

So this is a Medley! A Rider’s Account  by Sheila Fuller

The weather forecast of wind and rain did nothing to deter a fine entry of 31 riders from making our way to Loughway Stud on Sunday, 10th May, looking forward to our very first 3-phase Medley run by Leinster TREC. And our luck was in – no rain arrived until the end of the day, to the relief of organisers Niamh and Diana O’Huid, as well as the intrepid stewards at all the checkpoints!

So off to the map room we went, hi-viz gear on, tack check done, pens in hand, the 10 minutes to copy the map just flew past! On to the horses and off down the drive and on to the road. Right or left? OK, right it was and off we trotted, now where is that first turn off on the right hand side? Through that farm gate? Yes! Ah, a lovely grassy track, we can really move on now! Whoops, a check point round a corner! AND the first of the Obstacles, laid out on the track, a Slalom and Corridor, what to go for? – a safe trot or a risky canter? Ok, let’s try the safe trot, good, got some points there then.

On again on that lovely grassy track, round the corner, oops again, the MA corridor, oh yes I think the steward mentioned that! No choice now, canter first, then walk back, think we might have jogged a bit there, a pity. Partner did well though. OK, checkpoint again, oh no – it’s Grids now! We are given our instruction sheet, and try to identify the Grid Points, while the gale tries to blow both map and sheet away into the bog! Nice CP Steward lets me use the bonnet of her car while partner uses the table. And of course our new route looks totally different from our original drawn map! So it’s out onto the road once more.

Right or left? Yes, still going right… past Wallaby Woods (saw those signs, but is it also a wood?!)… and here we are, our next turn right into an almost hidden little road, but got it! Trot on, and now we are really out in the wilds, in the Boglands of Kildare, and that wind is rapidly becoming a wild gale across the open spaces! Our horses hear things in the wind that we can’t hear and are on full alert, but keep trotting on.

Right, it’s time to walk for a while, here’s a T-junction we weren’t expecting, now which way do we go here? Let’s try left… no, that doesn’t seem to follow our map route, back again, try right, great because here’s a ticket sign we have to write down. And another. Good, we got those, no penalties we hope.…. Time for a trot again. Whoops, there’s another Checkpoint, end of our Grids and more obstacles too. OK, Bank first, good horse, up and over, oh no! Went outside the chalk lines. Dismount now, Incline Up, sharp right turn, Incline Down… t-h-i-n-k we got that OK, some points there hopefully.

Mount the horse again, good Treccie boy to stand so still, partner’s horse just as good and off we go, back to the road again pretty confident this time we go left towards home, so we can trot for a bit. But carefully now, there’s another loop on the route on our map, we need to find that turn off.

Past Wallaby Woods once more and then slow down, time to walk because it must be very soon and there it is! We see another couple of riders ahead turning off, that helps! We turn there too, it matches the map so that’s OK, and onto another lovely track through woodland and grassy meadows. On we go, taking it steady now – luckily because round a corner comes a pair of quad bikes! Neither of us was expecting the other but our good Treccie horses just look and then carry on. Just when we’re wondering where the next checkpoint could be, and should we trot or walk, we spot the glint of a car ahead hidden in the trees. And good! - more of the obstacles again, this time Mounted Immobility and S-bend. So Immobility first, into the circle, make sure all 4 feet are in, now drop the reins. Oh no, the boy spots grass, has to eat it of course. Did his feet stay in that circle? On to the S-bend, usually good at this, but not this time, the awful clatter is heard as he knocks it. Partner does much better, thankfully!

We get ready to set off again. Suddenly the Steward steps forward again with a wicked smile and says ‘Can I have your maps please?’ What, no maps! We are handed another sheet of paper, what is it, ah, Bearings! Compasses out and here we go … ‘Follow a track starting on a bearing of 22 degrees for 138 metres’… OMG, which of 3 possible tracks is that one? Compass sort-of points to one, let’s believe and go! Count horses’ steps, yes that’s about 138m, sort-of, and yes! There’s a little gap and path going left. Confirm next bearings with compass, that all looks a bit boggy though, but we must be right because there is another ticket to note down! We keep going, following our bearings sheet and feel very relieved when we catch sight of the Checkpoint again. And even more relieved when we get our maps back!

OK, now off again and we feel this has to be nearly the last stretch… or could there be another sneaky checkpoint before home? We do a mix of walk and trot just in case, watch for another turn right, pity there’s no riders in front to spot this time! Ah, next turn was easy, a definite side road then another track to the left. Now we can really move on this lovely grassy path through woods and bogland. Checkpoint ahead? Maybe! Who cares, let’s just enjoy this! But sure enough before we get back to the venue, there it is! ‘Can I have your Rider Card please? You’re finished the POR now!’ says the smiling steward.

But it’s not quite over and we are pointed towards an amazing grassy lane between the trees, with the last set of obstacles – a Hedge, Reinback and Tree Trunk, all built using the nearby felled logs & branches! This looks like fun, but what will my horse think, he’s used to coloured poles and these are natural. Good boy though, never hesitated and flew the jumps. And now it’s over. We relax and walk slowly back the short distance home.

So now we know what a Medley is… very different and quite a challenge, mixing POR, PTV and MA. Doing obstacles and MA out in the open spaces was new to us and our horses were easily distracted. The hard-working and patient stewards were kept very busy as ourselves and other horses and riders were held at checkpoints while each did the obstacles. It was a far cry from the arena-based PTV we are more used to but probably much nearer the reality of the original TREC. We enjoyed it a lot and hope that the Medley will be repeated again in the future.
