TREC Ireland is hosting the Young Riders European Championship in 2017 (you must be aged between 16 and 21 on the day of the competition, which is scheduled for the first weekend September-TBC).

Because it is on home ground and because we will be eligible to field more than one Team in 2017, we are asking everyone who has expressed an interest in the last year or two with regard to the TREC Ireland Young Riders Panel to get in touch.

TREC is quite a young sport in Ireland, but it is growing rapidly with lots of training days and competitions now being held across the country. As well as this, two new regions were formed in 2014 which will all help towards making training and competitions more accessible to our members.

Now that the brighter evenings are coming our way, it is time to start thinking about the coming year and making plans, but also keeping in mind that the next two years can act as training and schooling with the end goal being success for Ireland in 2017.

In order to do this, the committee would like to get an idea of how many young riders may be interested in training and competing between now and 2017.

If you are interested, please contact pro@trecireland.com or Helen McCormack at 3 Orwell Grove, Baylough, Athlone, Co. Westmeath. If you have any queries regarding the young riders panel, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

The Open Championships will take place in Quin, Co. Clare in May and they will be followed later in the year by the National Championship. Training dates and competitions details can be found on the TREC Ireland website www.trecireland.com.

If you drive in, to or through Northern Ireland, the attached memo is important reading for you.

Memo to Sport Sub Board Members:

Note from David Kirkpatrick, Hon Secretary, Equestrian Council for Northern Ireland

The Equestrian Council of Northern Ireland has recently been made aware of the above legislation

which impacts non UK vehicles weighing 12 tonnes and over using UK roads. These vehicles are

liable to pay a levy as soon as they enter UK territory – the levy is required to be paid before entering

the UK. It would appear that two R of I registered horseboxes travelling home recently were stopped

and had to pay a £300 fine. The costs which are payable on daily, weekly or monthly rates range

from £2.10 per day to £35 per month depending on the lorry vehicle band. Further information is

available from the following web sites:

https://www.gov.uk/g...-road-user-levy

http://www.eurotunne...road-user-levy/

This has the potential to impact equestrian sport within Northern Ireland and ECNI will be lobbying

the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland to seek an exemption for vehicles involved in equestrian

sport. We may be approaching you shortly to seek your assistance with this and will contact you

again later in this regard. In the interim we felt it was appropriate to make you aware of the

legislation as it may affect a number of your members with immediate effect. The websites also

provide information on how to pay the levy. We hope that we have included all relevant

organisations in this email and would ask that you forward it on as you consider appropriate.

Regards,

NOTE: UK HGV Road User Levy Information

The Equestrian Council for Northern Ireland would like remind HGV lorry owners aware of the HGV

Road User Levy. This legislation was introduced in April 2014 and requires all vehicles registered

abroad (including the Republic of Ireland) weighing 12 tonnes and over using UK roads to pay the

HGV Levy, vehicles are liable as soon as they enter the UK territory. The Levy must be paid before

entering the UK. The levy can be paid by day, week, month or year and discounts are available for

longer levy periods. Further information is available on www.gov.uk/government/collections/hgv-

road-user-levy and http://www.eurotunne...road-user-levy/. For

vehicles registered in UK the levy is included within the Vehicle Excise rates currently applied to the

vehicle.

ECNI is aware that two vehicles were recently the subject of on the spot fines of £300 on the A1.

The daily rates are dependent upon the vehicle size and vary between £2.10 and £10 per day, weekly

and monthly rates are also available and can be found on the above website. This has the potential

to impact equestrian sport within Northern Ireland and ECNI will be lobbying the Secretary of State

for Northern Ireland to seek an exemption for vehicles involved in equestrian sport.

On Sunday, 15th February, eager riders and their mounts headed for Kingsdale Stud near Derrinturn, Co Kildare for a chance to brush up their PTV skills in readiness for the year ahead.

Thanks to owner Padraic O’Neill, we had both the large outdoor arena and the Derby Field Obstacles available for practice, and he had even organised the sun to shine for the day! With so much space, a total of 14 different TREC obstacles were laid out, many of which could be done as Led Obstacles also. They included Mounting, One-Handed Figure of Eight, Low Branches, Slalom, Tree Trunk, Ditch, S-bend, Water Crossing, Path Crossing, Drop and Step-Up.

As the first group headed out, on-foot helper Rosemarie Bryson went with them, accompanied by experienced rider Diana O’Huid. An experienced Judge, Rosemarie was able to tell the riders what was required at each Obstacle while Diana rode them to demonstrate how it should be done. With many newcomers on the day, as well as riders who had come along for a refresher, this formula worked well. Other groups were also accompanied on-foot, by Karen Reilly and Catherine Bartley who are both International riders, and with Niamh O’Huid (Level 3 TREC rider) mounted to demonstrate the Obstacles.

The last group of the day were 3 Junior Participants mounted on ponies, who were trying TREC for the first time. Accompanied by Catherine on foot, they had a great time either trying to get the ponies to stand (Immobility) or go (Water Crossing) and enjoyed ducking down to do the Low Branches!

As always with TREC, the challenges of the variety of Obstacles made for an interesting and fun day, and the smiles on everyone’s faces on finishing their practice said it all.

Our PTV/MA League starts on Sunday, 1st March and we have plenty more practice and training sessions organised throughout the year, so we look forward to meeting everyone again soon.

There was an air of anticipation as the riders and judges gathered in the indoor arena of the legendary Stradbally Hall, Co. Laois for the rider’s briefing of this year’s Trec Ireland National Championships. Traceur, Adrian Flynn and Technical Delegate, Karen Nicholson laid down the ground rules and the guidelines for all three phases of the competition. Riders from across Ireland and Britain were informed that they would start their competition in a map room at Leech’s pub of Wolfhill and the level 3 and 4 competitors would navigate their way 30 kilometres across country back to the estate.

The electrolyte sachets and syringes that were given to every competitor by event sponsors, Horse First were put to good use as the temperatures soared and together with fly spray they became a saddlebag essential. It was late afternoon on Saturday before the last riders were welcomed over the finish line by judges, Grainne Ni Uid and Adele O’Connor. Early leaders after first phase were current European Cup champion, Hilary Bernard in the level 4, Kerry’s Elaine Waters in the Level 3 with young rider Rohan Madhaven hot on her heels. Level 2 pairs, West Cork’s Jane Capener and Shirley Squire were in a head to head battle with Britian’s Amanda Marfleet and Vicki Glynn while the level 1 pairs were equally exciting with only two penalties separating the duo of Turas Trec’s Cassie O’Connell and Maeve Begley from Ciaran and Anne-Marie Cronin. Organiser’s Niamh O hUid and Sheaffe Mitchell welcomed the competitors, judges and their families a hot meal in the local pub where wrong turns, moments of doubts and feats of horsemanship were relived. When the scores for the day were posted, the buzz heightened as congratulations and commiserations over missed tickets.

Adrian Flynn took full advantage of the beautiful parklands to produce a fast and exciting obstacle phase that saw riders taking on challenging but straight forward cross country jumps in combination with the more technical Trec style ones. The course flowed over almost 3 kilometres and the level 3 and 4 riders were required to attack the course to avoid time penalties. Mairead Moynihan and Bambi Carroll closed the gap but were unable to pull ahead of Hilary who took the Level 4 crown. Donegal’s Lisa Moore on her cracking coloured cob, Jo Dazzler pulled out all the stops to take the level 3 title with Leinster’s Rohan Madhaven in second. Britain’s Amanda Marfleet and Vicki Glynn didn’t put a foot wrong and won the Level 2 pairs and qualified for the British Championships in August. Johanna Connor finished just one penalty ahead of Judi Pheysey to take the Level 2 individual crown. Level 1 had a nail biting finish with time penalties proving to be the downfall of many but Heidi Doyle and Elaine Neary wasted none to take the lead over the obstacles to pull ahead and come away with the Level 1 title.

The presentation of prizes was held on the scenic front lawn of the big Stradbally Hall. Horse First provided impressive hampers packed with their popular supplements for the victors. A great supporter of Trec, Horse First’s Terri Brosnan and organisers Niamh O’hUid and Sheaffe Mitchell presented the hampers, rosettes and trophys to a the winners accompanied by huge cheers and applause. The National Grangeclare Cups went to the Irish riders with the highest score in each division. Turas Trec’s Bambi Carroll came away with the Level 4 cup while Donegal Trec’s Lisa Moore won the Level 3 cup. Leinster Trec’s Diana O’Huid was a popular winner of the Level 2 cup and Turas Tec’s Cassie O’Connell was cheered as she went up to receive the Level 1 honours. The English Team, Foreign Legionaires managed to pip the Donegal Team in the last phase to take the team honours.

Trec Ireland will like to thank all the volunteers who came to judge and help, to vet Kate Murray, farrier Finian Carroll and all of Leinster Trec who hosted the event.

The weekend witnessed the first event of Three Counties TREC held in Drumshanbo Co. Leitrim by kind invitation of John Mcloughlin of Grangefort Equestrian Enterprises. A new member of TREC Ireland Three Counties TREC covers the counties of Leitrim, Roscommon and Longford. This new club was founded earlier in the year and having won the level one pairs national championship title in Stradbally Co. Laois they successfully went onto to host their first Training day in Co. Leitrim which took place on Sunday 21st.

With superb weather there was a good entry for the day, including many newcomers to the sport with eight competitors in the Junior section! In addition to welcoming riders from across the region some as far as Athlone and across the border this offered many riders their first opportunity to experience TREC.

This successful day was made further possible by our Technical Delegate of the day and Secretary of TREC Ireland Karen Murphy. Karen recently returned from Italy, where she mentored the young rider squad who competed at the TREC Young Rider World Championships.

The day kicked off with riders all kitted out in high vis gear with highlighters at the ready for Map room training with Karen. This was followed by a short break for some refreshments and home made treats which were kindly provided on-site throughout the day by Maura Farrell.

Sun cream was then applied by a few before setting out for the course walk to include COP (Control Of Paces) and PTV (Obstacles). Spectators were interested to see the variety of equines competing ranging from 11hh ponies up to 16.2hh .The use of western tack was also a focal point used by one competitor Elizabeth Cunnane who came all the way from Co. Roscommon much to the interest of Rob Steinke master saddler who came to support.

Some interesting options on course with breathtaking views but nothing would distract from the much coveted High score sash to be won! This was kindly sponsored by X-Factor rosettes located in Co. Galway.

Co Founder of Three Counties TREC, Elaine Neary spoke of the incredible reaction from competitors and spectators alike “ They were blown away by the facilities, stunning scenery and the warm welcome from the Grangefort team” Elaine said.

John McLoughlin,,owner of Grangefort Equestrian Enterprises, has many plans for the future. A professionally run facility with newly built indoor walker and lunge pen,2 all weather arenas plus approx 120miles of trekking to explore surrounded by forestry and the stunning Sliabh an Iarainn mountains.

“Grangefort has so much potential. It is a stunning venue and everything is here to create a leading competition centre in the Mid West.I am very excited about my future plans and completing further construction to help make it the success I want it to be.” John said. Hosts John and the wonderful team at Grangefort treated riders to a beautiful setting and with great orienteering and excellent facilities; we all look forward to returning for more adventures later in the future.

TRI EQUESTRIAN LEINSTER TREC 3-PHASE EVENT, PUNCHESTOWN RACECOURSE, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 12TH

Many hands make light work, or in the case of Leinster TREC, many hands worked hard to ensure the success of the group’s three phase competition held on the 8th of October. The TRI Equestrian sponsored event also served as the final event in the TRI Equestrian sponsored PTV/CoP League. With almost 50 riders participating in the competition, it was a busy day for all involved.

The PTV gave plenty of opportunity to open the horses up with a good canter between obstacles. Ailbhe Gavin and Tara Creighton prepared a fair yet challenging course making good use of the natural terrain as well as the cross country facilitates in Punchestown. Traceur’s for the event, Niamh O’Huid and Sheila Fuller prepared a varied POR route with stubble fields, winding tracks,, secluded tree-lined pathways, open pasture land and the type of grassy lanes that leave you itching to kick on in canter.

Overall placings are listed below. A range of spot prizes were also presented; Best Co-ordinated Horse and Rider: Lorna O'Neill, Best PTV Score (134 points): Sophie Robinson, Best CoP Score (47 points): Louise Parkhill, Best Newcomer: Jasmine Mortimer, Furthest Travelled: (Jane Capener) and

Best Under 18: Sophie Robinson

Sincere thanks must go to all who made this event the success it was, to riders who travelled to represent TREC groups from as far afield as Kerry, South East, West Cork, Midlands, Donegal, Northern Ireland as well as the hosts, Leinster TREC. To the volunteers who travelled to support the event, also to Technical Delegate; Adrian Flynn. Thank you also to the generous landowners without whom routes would not be possible, to Punchestown Racecourse, for first class facilities and generous sponsorship of spot prizes, to TRI Equestrian for their ongoing generosity in sponsoring both the competition and the league. Finally, sincere thanks to the Leinster TREC committee who dedicated themselves to many months of planning for the event; congratulations on a job well done.

Level 3 Individual - 1, Sullane Lady (Mairead Moynihan); 2, Annie’s Prince (Rohan Madhaven); 3, Rock on Villa (Karen Reilly).

TREC Ireland as members of Horse Sport Ireland, are keen to support excellence across all equestrian spheres.  There is no doubt that Bertram Allen is an example of such excellence.  Therefore we ask you to read the following news release from H.S.I and Team Ireland Equestrian and give Bertram your vote for this prestigous award.

Showjumping sensation Bertram Allen has been nominated for the Irish Independent Young Sports Star of the Year Award. Bertram has had an incredible year so we are asking all Affiliates to support the campaign to help him win this prestigious and deserving award.

The nomination reads: ‘’Bertram is, unquestionably, the biggest sensation in international showjumping right now. The 19-year-old from Wexford lies 19th in the World Rankings following a sensational year during which he won a qualifier for the 2015 World Cup in Las Vegas as well as the Grand Prix in Belgium and Dublin Horse Show before joining the Irish Team for the World Equestrian Games in Caen, where he finished seventh in the individual.’’

Please help Support Your Team Ireland Equestrian Nominee by asking all your members, friends and contacts to Vote for Bertram.

Simply collect and complete coupons available in the Saturday and Monday issues of the Irish Independent until voting closes on 17th December. And tell all your friends!
